111 Minna Gallery: San Francisco

New works by JAY HOWELL
March 6-29th

Opening Reception: March 6th at 6pm

111 Minna Gallery is delighted to present Jay Howell’s PUNKS GIT CUT showing new paintings, photos and animations exhibiting March 6 - 29th. The Gallery will host an artist reception Thursday, March 6th at 6pm with San Francisco band, The Jizz performing live plus special guest DJ’s spinning tunes throughout the evening. The reception is FREE and open to the public. The exhibition will be on view from Thursday, March 6th through March 29th. 111 Minna Gallery is located at the corner of Minna and 2nd Streets in downtown San Francisco.

San Francisco’s raconteur of the arts and music scene - painter, cartoonist, publisher, DJ, cyclist, and dog lover, Jay Howell, will present his first major solo show.

"It sounds silly, but I just want people to laugh, it means so much to me and nothing else matters."
– J. Howell

As with all his endeavors Jay brings to the PUNKS GIT CUT exhibition the same spirit of invention and authentic outlook that characterize his zine of the same name that he has been publishing for the last twelve years.

After flunking out of Art School in only six months Howell, professing an “I don’t know what the hell I’m doing and I don’t care” attitude, kept drawing – gross cartoons, funny cartoons – going on to create skateboard graphics for Antihero and Consolidated. He exaggerates the eccentricities of the human character while simultaneously generalizing about our wide range of shared characteristics like boners and cute dogs.

Jay is the author of countless books and zines, most recently the instructional guides; Dog and Dog Information and Let Me Tell You Where to Stick It (with Audrey Erickson). Jay is also co-owner of the record label Mount Saint Mountain, who with partner Mark Kaiser, has continued to put out great records for the last several years. For more information go to: www.punksgitcut.blogspot.com or mtstmtn.com.

ALISON JACKSON: ARTIST

Alison Jackson has caught my attention for reasons that are undeniably apparent and obvious in her work.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Powerful images dominate the world. Pictures of celebrities who have reached the status of icons or demons. They are news - whether they are the Royal Family, Madonna, Posh and Becks or Britney Spears. This news becomes intrigue; it becomes difficult to differentiate between what is real and what is fantasy, what is important and what is not.

These celebrities are the icons of this contemporary folk religion. The pictures we have of them correspond to the religious pictures of the past. We find ourselves believing that what these pictures portray, really is the whole 'truth' about the subject. For example, Marilyn Monroe is just a sex goddess; Britney Spears is white trash; Camilla is usually portrayed with a touch of the wicked old witch and so on.

The question is: How limited a picture do we receive of these icons? We suspect there is much more than we are told or read about. So our imaginations get to work to compensate for our lack of real information. Thus we are continually being seduced away from the 'truth' into a world which has no 'real' grounds of integrity and authenticity. At best, a photograph of a celebrity reproduces something authentic only at the very moment the shutter clicks. We have been teased and seduced into giving tiny fragments of 'reality' an absolute authenticity. Images are by nature titillating and 'of fantasy' , aiding this process. The photograph has become more real than the real.

This work is about simulation. Creating a clone or a copy of the 'real' on paper. It is not a fake, it takes the place of the 'real' for a moment, whilst looking at the image. The aim is to create likenesses of icons, where in the image, the simulations of icons, 'threatens the difference between 'true' and 'false, between 'real' and 'imaginary'. The 'real' subject becomes not necessary. The photographic image or the icon is more important and more seductive. It doesn't matter to the viewer if the portrayal is not the 'real' - as long as it looks like him or her - it creates a temporary confusion. This is the confusion the work searches to create. We think we are looking at something real, but we're not. They are false images of look-alikes of the real thing.

Nevertheless, the photograph is authentic one sense, Jane Smith and Jo Bloggs really exist as look-alikes within the image, but they portray a false picture of perception. The photographs reflect what really exists in the public imagination. They highlight the difference between what we see and what we imagine. This is bound up in our inherent greedy voyeurism and our need to believe.

©MURAKAMIi: Los Angeles

I've gotten a chance to visit the exhibit twice now & haven't posted about it. It's seriously amazing. I was never a big fan of Murakami, but seeing his art in person made me appreciate the man's imagination. He's known for depicting flat images & using thousands of appealing eye candy colors that appeal to the fields of both fine art & commercial audiences. It made me wonder how crazy his dreams must be.

Here are a few photos of his pieces up for viewing in the exhibit:

Also featured in the exhibit are screenings of Kaikai & Kiki's episode 1 cartoon and Mr. West's Good Morning music video that you wont find anywhere else. Murakami directed the music video & provided all of the art included in Kanye's album.

Maybe next month!

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art offers a variety of opportunities for persons and students to get in touch with the city's popular culture of art. Yesterday, I had the occasion to visit the entire museum for free! Every first Tuesday of the month, The SFMOMA gives free admission to all exhibits in the Museum. For all my poor, fellow peers who are looking for penniless but thought-provoking entertainment, I'd highly recommend taking advantage of this. If you plan to visit The MOMA before their next free day of admission, I'd suggest checking out the light exhibit at the top floor. The lighting of the exhibit is in all flourescent coloring and is a definite must for those who plan to blaze before visiting. Unfortunately, you cannot take pictures in any part of the museum.

check out a grip of artists from november sixth till january twelfth in downtown. it's all ages and it's free, kiddies:

pick up issue 007 of [GOOD] magazine for a feature about predicting the future using game theory and fucked up discussion about downtown los angeles:

welcome to los angeles - with one of the country's most notorious slums sitting within spitting distance of new million-dollar lofts and five-star hotels, los angeles is using tough new policing to clean up its worst eyesore. for the children of skid row, though, it's business as usual--finding shelter, trying to stay out of trouble, and most of all, getting out.

on the more properly amusing side of things, let's watch [CIRQUE DU SOLEIL] this monthhh. orange county or san francisco. hmm:
