///lunar eclipse///
You've heard of a blue moon, but how about a red one?
Early Tuesday - if you've got insomnia or the inclination to be awake about 3:37 a.m. - you should be able to see a coppery red hue on a shaded moon.
One of the greatest lunar eclipses in years will begin just a few hours after midnight, and the West Coast will have one of the best seats in the global house.
"It's like nothing you'll see in the sky," said Ben Burress, a staff astronomer at Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland. "That alone makes it worth getting out of bed and taking a look."
This total lunar eclipse - a phenomenon that occurs only when the Earth finds its way directly between a full moon and the sun - will be especially long, lasting a little more than four hours. But the best viewing will be mid-eclipse, when the moon spends about 90 minutes entirely in the Earth's shadow.
Early Tuesday, the moon will gradually darken as the Earth's shadow falls upon it, but it won't appear completely black, said Andrew Fraknoi, chairman of the astronomy program at Foothill College. Light bent through the Earth's atmosphere will give the orb a dull brown or reddish glow. The exact color is determined by how dirty the atmosphere is - whether volcanoes have recently erupted and how much cloud cover, storm activity and human pollution there is, Fraknoi said.
On average, there is about one lunar eclipse a year, although some years have none and others as many as three. But most are only partial eclipses, and some are visible only from other parts of our planet.
"This will be a magical eclipse out your way," said Jim Garvin, chief scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. The view on the East Coast, he said, won't be nearly as spectacular, and only observers to the west of the Rocky Mountains will be treated to the entire event. The show won't be visible at all from Europe, Africa or western Asia.
Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are completely safe to watch. You don't need protective filters for your eyes, or even a telescope. But a pair of binoculars will certainly help magnify the view and make the red coloration brighter and easier to see.
If you miss this total lunar eclipse, you'll have to wait until Feb. 21 for another one. But the moon won't be covered for nearly as long. That eclipse, however, will have one big upside: It will take place in the evening, rather than during the wee hours of the morning, Burress said, "so that will be a little easier on the eyes."

///karen walker///
[KAREN WALKER] is my favorite new zealand designer. ever. yeh, i used to live in auckland. and yeh, aucklanders' sense of fashion is a fuckload better than that of lost angels. she makes amazing clothes [not too sure where in LA you can cop them] and now also does eyewear. i read somewhere [i can't remember where] that her eyewear collection only hit los angeles stores semi-recently and it's pretty snazzy, yup.
better than all the rayban wayfarer wannabes:
i enjoy circlish shades. i wish i had the circle pollinis.. but these might do:
squares are nice:
so are rectangles:
i'm pretty happy about her using an arrow for the branding. genius:
can't fucking sleep,

///TASCHEN///
[TASCHEN] has recently opened a second store in LA. the first LA store was opened in 2003 in beverly hills. this new store is located inside the historic clock tower in the middle of the grove and the farmers market. it was designed immaculately by [PHILIPPE STARCK], as is tradition with all the taschen stores. the store includes books about almost everything and anything. taschen art books are quality art books. both aesthetically pleasing and highly knowledgeable. great for research, coffee tables, beauty, inspiration, intrigue, insight, bedroom floors, and long bathroom trips.
here's some random eye candy..
i bought this [PHAIDON] book [comparable to taschen] recently in viet nam:
[JENNY HOLZER], check her out. crazy messages, crazy mediums.

i came across a fashion editorial last night that was using [PIERRE CARDIN]'s atypical bubble house near cannes as the location. an amazing piece of architecture designed by [ANTTI LOVAG].

sooo, yeh.. i need to check out the new taschen store sooon. and i also need to visit a museum, any museum, to write a report about two paintings of my choice sooon. this weekend, perhaps? hollaaa.
do as you please,

audio-electicism spreads through music festivals
LAS VEGAS
If you missed out on Daft Punk last month, no worries - your life will be just a tad bit more complete when you catch them this upcoming October at Vegoose. Ooooh, the good news doesn't stop there. Rage Against The Machine, The Shins, Public Enemy, Blonde Redhead, and Muse will also be performing! The complete lineup hasn't been announced yet, so keep checking into Vegoose.com for any further announcements.
SAN FRANCISCO
The Treasure Island Festival is also coming up quick. It's an awfully mellow lineup - no? Unlike Vegoose, this festival may lack heavy moshpits and sweat... but at least M.I.A., Gotan Project, and DJ Shadow/Cut Chemist will push the intensity level up a few notches. Nonetheless, this festival has you in for a great lineup.
Click HERE for more Treasure Island information, and HERE for Vegoose information.
On another note: If you're around Long Beach tomorrow night, Fionn Regan is stopping by Fingerprints for an in-store performance at 7 pm. If you've never heard of him, surprise your ears and come!
yours truly,
Menchie

///wednesday night///
spent the night hanging out with nia and nemo. there were three parts to it.. meltdown, coach & horses, dub club.
crazy hanging out with this girl! all night long, "i'm nia. and this is my friend, nia." [ta]nia&nia[ssa].
first off, we dropped by meltdown comics on sunset to check out the simpsons art show. kofie and food one did a huge killer collaborative mural on the wall. if you want to have a look, i think it will be up for one more week before they go over it.
i went around looking at some of the customized bart dolls. maybe saw about a quarter of the collection. there were some really unique ones. nia and i wanted to buy them. and paint our own.. kinda. haha.
food one ninja bart on the wall to the left. kofie circle on the wall behind. bart with a grill on the far right!
i think this was bigger than me. you know, like, 4'8"..
i kept taking the wrong exits, getting lost and wasting a bunch of gas. we got to meltdown late and all the alcohol was gone by the time we arrived. chevron [westwood x national] is where you'll find me every other day.
since there was no alcohol left for us, we ended up drinking their free red bulls and buying a bottle of southern comfort from the liquor store down the way. [pictured: nia and nemo]
then we headed over to coach & horses, still on sunset, for a few drinks. created an asian invasion. [pictured: me, food one, kim]
can't forget, it was codak's birthday [august 1st].. happy birthday again! [pictured: codak, me, nia]
i think we spent more time in the bathroom than in the actual bar area there.. we even made a new best friend in the bathroom! she walked in asking how old we were.. we said 21 and 22. she was telling us how she felt like she was our age, even though she was 27. lol. nia got a bobbypin out of the whole experience, plus a lovely group photo [after about ten tries..].
then off we went to dub club at the echo, cos nia had never been before. and wow.. i had not been there for mooonths. the new renovations are greeeat. the whole inside layout is so much more open and breathable now. nia wanted us to dance on stage.. so we did. old rasta men.. hmm.
then they wanted us to go to the back room and smoke with them.. so we did. hilarious!
this one spit maddd game.. all you males could learn a thing or two from him. haha, but not really. there was also some sort of documentary in progress.. that was weird.
again, i had nooo business behind the wheel. but it was a fun night fa'sho.
i want chocolate milk,
SOULSTAR*
p.s. i knit that beanie myself. it took me an entire year.. i'm accepting orders.
