Mural Project in West LBC

So I've been asked to help with a Mural project in the heart of West Long Beach. The site of the mural will include the wall on the west side of Santa Fe Avenue, between 23rd Street and 25th Street. We will be working to create a mural visually reflecting the histories and strengths of various ethnic and cultural groups that make up the Westside's diverse community.

There's a historical workshop im attending that will provide useful information about the meaning behind the walls mural, so we know what to paint haha. Ill keep ya posted as more develops.

more info: www.myspace.com/westsidemuralproject

These are the themes the wall will hold after its finished. Peep game:

I mean, it is a pretty long wall ya know =)

no one's too old for cartoons. especially a BEATLES cartoon .. strawberry fields forever. enjoy.

& of course, the greatest gathering of a single group of peaceful like-minds .. Woodstock. Richie Havens had to perform for almost two hours to buy time for other artists to get flown in from helicopters. he's singing strawberry fields & i dont think its included in the Woodstock documentary.

Dietra Kruschev

This Saturday at the Academy [433 E. 1st St., Long Beach].

Word on the street is that Dietra Kruschev is quite phenomenal - droning bass lines, ethnic beats, and distant ululating vocals are what I've heard via youtube - all of which equate to a recipe for amazing, a sort of sound that strikes one at the core, reverberating through the chest cavity and warming the heart.

So i may actually come out of my hermit-hole that I've been in for the last two months and check them out. But even if i don't - you still should, and then tell me all about it.

///arkitip///

i just purchased this online - [arkitip issue 0040].

i had never heard about arkitip magazine before [yeh, i'm probably really slow]. but i came across it about ten minutes ago and it just might be the dopest artsy magazine i've seen this year. i mean, [the journal], [soma], [flaunt], [juxtapoz], [pop] and [i-D] are all good, too. but this [arkitip] one looks amaaazing. i mean.. i see magazines that are paired with a free cd or something normal like that. but this magazine pairs their shitt with random cool stuff like a bag of the artist's italian espresso coffee blend, made especially for that particular issue. each magazine is a numbered, limited edition copy. you can [click here] to see all the issues of arkitip so far. most of them are sold out already. but even just looking at the assortment of covers is great! haha. as it says on their [information page], "each issue is like an original piece of art in and of itself." it's some quality shitt.

and yes, devera, you may borrow it from me once i get it. haha.

///PBW vs. LA///

7 CLUBS 7 NIGHTS 7 STYLES

On the week of June 10th, I will be doing my first 7 night "DJ tour" of one city, playing a different style of music each night. I've decided to use only vinyl and no record will be repeated twice. I came up with the idea recently when I was moving all my records to a new house. The way I used to organize them at my old house was like the liquor at bars. My favorite records on the top shelf, second favorites on the second shelf, etc. No ABC order, no BPM order. Pretty much a big mess in the end. This made DJing with vinyl a nightmare. When Serato came out, I was in love (and I'm still down for it), but I wanted to reorganize my records a better way so I could go back to spinning with actual vinyl from time to time.

At my new house, I took on the project of putting them into genres to make it easier to find things (kinda like how record stores are set up). At that point, the idea came to me. And living in LA, it's the perfect city to do this. Since it's 7 nights, 7 clubs, 7 genres, I wanted to do it around the week of 7-7-07, but unfortunately I'll be in Europe at that time. I will have a new podcast of all spiritual music that I'm putting out on that date though.

Here's the breakdown of the "LA tour". The styles of music listed are the ones I chose to play:

Sun, June 10: The Do-Over @ Cranes Tavern | 80's early house & electro
Mon, June 11: Funkmosphere @ Carbon | 80s rare soul & boogie
Tues, June 12: Cinespace | 90's hipster ironic BADD covers (C.M.B.)
Wed, June 13: Dub Club @ The Echo |70's dub & roots reggae 45s
Thurs, June 14: The Root Down @ Little Temple | 80's hip hop 45s
Fri, June 15: Firecracker @ Grand Star | 70's disco-jazz & Afro-Latin
Sat, June 16: Funky Sole @ Star Shoes | 60s deep funk 45s

Hopefully, I can do this in other cities in the future as well.

thomas wardlow and ricky webb together finally.

thomas wardlow and aki turner together finally.

cops told ricky's tall-ass to stop tryna cut to the front of the line lol.

TKE THAT! TKE THAT!

proper posin'.

thomas feelin' it.

aki's turn next.

the black boys lovin' the electro again.

hittin' the vodka againnn.

look at that face.

spotted that cute lesbian couple from fourth street again. freakin' on the dancefloor this time.

the shortest girl and the tallest guy.

the guys meeting random weirdos out back. some guy that dressed and looked like he was in a mariachi band or something asked if i was filipina then told me he was cambodian and his friend told me i looked like an eskimo. what are these people ON? i think i love them.

my american apparel shorts were a big hit apparently. according to some guy at the bar that told me he liked them [i assumed he was gay. but.. who knows]. also according to the 300-pound black bouncer who was "old enough," talking about me to ricky as if i wasn't there. guess we'll be getting in for free next time, guys! lol.

an after-clubbing skating mission ensued.

ricky was really excited.

THOMAS WARDLOW FROM AZ TO LA!!!

some crazy guy giving people tattoos back at the apartment. lol jk, that's sonny jackson, son!

followed by a sad lack of sleep. i wonder how their hundreds' shoot went today.. half asleep and shitt.

The Sights and Sounds of Dj Dusk Festival

Using Art and Music to Create Positive Change

By Youth For Youth (BYFY) would like to invite you to the Sights and Sounds of Dusk Festival on Sunday, May 20th. We are welcoming youth artists, youth activists, and youth organizations to contribute to the event by performing and exhibiting their work from 4:30pm to 8:30pm. Performances will take place at the Mar Vista Family Center.

The festival will commemorate the life and work of our friend and mentor, Tarek Captan, who believed in using art and music to create positive social change. Although Tarek (A.K.A. "DJ Dusk") was tragically taken from us last year, his protégées and partners keep his memory alive on the music scene and in our community. It is our goal to combine Dusk's two passions into one event by recognizing youth artists, and exposing them to veteran performers and activists who have devoted their lives to music and art as a path to improving themselves and their communities. Our hope is that the event will turn into an annual celebration that will help cultivate activist artists.

If you would like to perform or participate in the event, please contact George Reyes or Jose Diaz at the Mar Vista Family Center.

///CHANGE OF PLANS///

aki, ricky, dynamite! and i had this big filming plan for yesterday [wednesday], but we ended up doing some other shitt. you know, shitt like.. wasting damn good time. haha.

apparently, it was nike day.

we went to first street cos i needed to return something that i bought on impulse [ughhh], but they don't do returns on that entire block! so we just paid visits to all the shops. went to proper and bought a new york hat co. cap. the boys did a whole bunch of skate talk that i didn't understand.

then we went to seams [is that what it's called?]. aki talked some more. ricky and i had a photoshoot. HAHAHA.

they have a dope-ass gallery out back. where people take cheesy-ass photos. LOL.

after first, we went to second. sold some shitt at buffalo exchange [my new favorite shopping place].

then went to rubio's.

for some bomb-ass FISH TACOS!!!

after eating, made a quick stop at fingerprints [love this stooore] and perused their magazine collection.

went back to the parking lot and had trouble deciding who was gonna drive and where we were gonna go.

ricky and i sat in the back.

while aki played cab driver.

we met up with dynamite! on fourth street.

saw a cute lesbian couple.

then some blvd&ave criminals at portfolio [coffee shop]. nerissa was there, too.. but we didn't find that out till we had left already! sorry, miss!

then it was ricky's turn to drive.

he took us to cherry park [is that right?] so we could take photos of him posing.

then i got ready..

for a..

sad attempt.. to OLLIE. hahaha.

after our short skating mission, we met up with dynamite! at his mansion on the hills [LOL], where he fed us fresh slices of pineapple, pound cake and showered us with bottles and bottles of water [hahahahahaha].

and.. ricky hopped on myspace again.

we headed to la pretty late. checked out that supra "party" in santa monica.. negative. it was fucking freezing out there. so we kicked it at my place for no reason. and went back to long beach. la sucked that day.

///ERYKAH BADU'S NEXT THREE ALBUMS///

•The first album, due in September, will be a "child of Baduizm," Badu says. "It most closely resembles that part of me. More tracks. Less live, in-studio stuff. It has more of my hip-hop roots to it, as far as drum and bass and pattern and sample and those kinds of things."

•The second album, released six months later, will be more like Mama's Gun. "It was more mature, musically and creatively."

•Badu calls the third disc "Slow Down Loretta Brown." "It's more jazz-oriented," she says. "It's classic blues, jazz, from as far back in my mind as I can go, the '20s, '30s, '40s. It flirts with that era a lot. And the character's name who I channel for that music is called Loretta Brown. ... She's from the past, where it meets the future, kind of."

i am seriously looking forward to he
