Hidden Galleries

So i know employees at local boutiques seem really cocky ... & they are, no im kidding. They just hate folding clothes & getting pointless calls .. so stop calling about release dates! Anyways, a few shops often have art work up that goes unappreciated .. like SEAMS, conveniently located in Long Beach's Art District. SEAMS' back rooms have a few pieces from their featured artist, Grande. So ask rudley if you can check it out.

Low on Graffiti supplies?

...yeah, thought so. You can never get enough of those good ol' streaks, paints, ink & blackbooks. Well lucky for me, they're in the lovely neighborhood of Long Beach. Thats right folks, 1143 Pine Ave. Long Beach, CA 90813. Its the unique combo of a store, a radio station (HiphopPhilosophy.com Radio broadcasting live daily from noon-to-8 p.m.) and graffiti art gallery. They sure know how to keep things funky down here. Stop by if you havent already.

Holga

Wikipedia defines the Holga as a very inexpensive, medium format box camera appreciated for its low-fidelity aesthetic ... In other words its made of plastic so it can take the occasional concrete & can handle the backpack or handbag. Quality's so cheap that you get unique photos with different effects. If you have the chedar you should most definately pick one up, photographer or not.

'sundays to relax/sundays to relax'
around six in the evening, a few friends and i headed to downtown to this random sweet spot called la cita for the soul dressing chill-out party. [see previous post: soul melt.] beer, dancing, photos, live art by dump and food one, dj expo and food one on the decks, blunt-passin' in the parking lot with the bouncer. conveniently placed [right next door], was an amaaazing little mexican spot with like, one dollar tacos. munchies solved. again, it was outdoors-ish, so we were freezing our toes off. but it was a good good trippp.
around eleven at night, we moved everyone and everything to sonido sundays at little temple on santa monica blvd. raggaaa! it was nice and toasty. good vibe. live raggaman yehhh! dump and food one did some live art there, too. and.. live art on my arms.

hidden trac vol. 1.
so i went to that hidden trac vol. 1 event last night. it was pretty cool. though, parking was a damned bitch so we only caught about fifteen minutes of the art reception. enough time to down one beer. say our hellos and browse the exhibit quickly. the retna/kofie dj dusk mural was overwhelmingly amazing, as expected. HUGE. i wasn't able to get very good shots of the whooole thing, cos there were so many people crowding the area, but i got some nonetheless. the gathering that followed the reception was in the vicinity. an outdoors thing. it was fucking freezing!!! but the djs were dope. and there was beer. you could smoke da reefa and whatever else you wished to consume and all that. but i just wish i wore more clothing [ie: snow gear or the likes].
the art reception:
the outdoor gathering that followed:

SOUL MELT.
just got home from the event [held at meltdown on sunset boulevard], featuring some of my favoriteee artists [bill shag, kofie, codak, food one]. there was music, cheap booze, people on valiums [haha.. hahahahahaha] and, of course, artartarttt! the concept was fucking dope. bill shag pretty much let several equally dope artists fuck around with his photos and these were some of of the results:
there was also some live art going on, too:

Artists of the Week #3
Apparently, these brothers (Jared and Michael Bell) have already been signed by Mush Records. Let me introduce to you...
LYBYC SYSTYM
I like this band because... well honestly, I'm a sucker for melancholy instrumental bands. This excerpt from their website pretty much sums it up for Lymbyc Systym... "Drawing inspiration from the groups Tortoise, My Bloody Valentine and Four Tet, their compositions cleverly combine vintage keyboards, infectious melodies, analog effects, dynamic drumming, and intricate laptop programming to form melodic and cohesive tracks that blur the borders between post-rock, indie-rock, and folktronica."
I don't know how many of you out there listen to instrumentals, but I have a feeling a lot of you don't. The absence of lyrics in a song shouldn't discourage anyone from listening to it because instrumentals are capable of so much more messages a listener could possibly interpret! I think it's amazing how you can read an artist's mood or message simply by listening to how the piece is assembled and the intonations of the instruments. (It's also really easy and fun to get lost in instrumentals when you're baked!)
The vibe I get from Lymbyc Systym is... melancholy but liberal. Lymbyc Systym is the kind of music that plays when you've had an epiphanous moment in your life as well as the kind of music that plays when you seek optimism and ventilation. Listen.
Good stuff right? If not, I applaud you for giving it a try.
Just in case you're interested, Lymbyc Systym will be doing a free performance at San Francisco's Amoeba on Sunday, April 22 at 2 pm in celebration of their debut full-length album "Love Your Abuser".
Don't miss out on free live awesome music yo!
Yours Truly,
Menchie

...and so Daft Punk returns!

Finally, the tour that you've all anticipated! It's been nine long years since Daft Punk has toured in US and now they're back with funkier dance beats, better robotic ensembles, and who knows what else this Parisian Duo will muster.
If you live in these cities, you are obligated to attend:
JULY
21 Los Angeles, CA – L.A. Sports Arena w/ Sebastian and Kavinsky
27 Berkeley, CA – Greek Theater w/ The Rapture + Sebastian and Kavinsky
29 Seattle, WA – WaMu Center w/ The Rapture + Sebastian and Kavinsky
31 Denver, CO – Red Rocks w/ The Rapture + Sebastian and Kavinsky
AUGUST
9 Coney Island, NY – Keyspan Park w/ the Rapture + Sebastian and Kavinsky
It's seriously an awesome lineup and one gigantic dance extravaganza.
Yours truly,
Menchie

STOP THE WAR PROTEST!

Yo, it's time to get political to show you sucka's the meaning behind what you live. The Democrats in D.C. would like you to believe they're trying to take our troops out of Iraq by the fall but since when has the government not been bullshitting us Americans. It's time to take down the giant curtain in front of our little eyes, and fight for what's ours. The Republicans and the Bush Administration have been sending more and more troops out to the Middle East to "liberate" their countries. Well BULLSHIT! Im sick and tired of hearing American troops being killed everyday by suicide bombers or what-have-you. The television and media would like you to believe its about 10 troops a day when in reality, its a good estimate of atleast 20-30 a day being killed!!!! We need to send our troops home! We are already the most hated country in the world because Bush likes to stick his nose elsewhere. Believe it or not, we are being imperialized; they are being imperialized. Americans are trying to take over the oil consumption and dominate. The world is threatned! The government keeps us busy and distracts us with updates on Britney Spears and Anna Nicole Smith, when the REAL problem is us at war. We have been at war for over 4 years now. THAT IS RIDICULOUS! We need to fix home before we start picking on countries. All I am saying is that there is more to life than what you see on billboards and whats new at the mall. You cannot rely on the government to show you the truth because they know Americans can't handle the truth. As corny as that sounds, IT'S TRUE! We, as Americans need answers. I attended a meeting on 4th street in Long Beach last Thursday concerning these problems. The A.N.S.W.E.R. (Act Now to Stop War & End Racism) Coalition along with hundreds of organizations are assembling a massive march/rally through the streets of Hollywood. There will also be a march on the Pentagon because we need to target the center of corruption.
The march/protest/rally will be on Saturday (this saturday) March, 17th at 12 noon on Hollywood & Vine in Los Angeles. We need the U.S. out of IRAQ! I, along with others will be taking the metro to save us from gas and parking. Its time for the people to stand up and fight for whats right! We need the money in New Orleans and not funding the WAR MACHINE! End to racism and stop attack on immigrants. This country is being eaten by big business barons and corporations. We cant be pushed around!
Also today, we have teams assembled to hit every highschool within the Long Beach district with flyers and pass them out to the kids. People have a right to be informed! We will be meeting at the Starbucks at 1:30pm on Willow & Cherry. Pick up your flyers and inform people. We also have wheatpasting teams that will be smashing Long Beach at night all this week. For more info on wheatpasting, contact me at (562) 810-8005.
And for more information on whats going down, visit the website at
or contact (323) 464-1636

tempt one art benefit.
on saturday i went to the tempt one art benefit at urb gallery in culver city. it was twenty dollars per head at the door. all ages. with a long-ass line. inside, it was packed like a club. which was good to see, as it was, after all, a charity event. i, personally, didn't have the money to purchase any of the dopedopedope pieces at the gallery. all i could afford was to take a bunch of photos with my falling-to-pieces camera. hopefully others had more money than i and were able to help out tempt one and his family through this event.
how do you put a cut? i posted wayyy too many photos for a main page.. excuse the flooding.
