Unsigned Artist of the Week #2

OH NO! OH MY! OH NO! OH MY! OH NO! OH MY! OH NO! OH MY!
An unsigned band who's already played at Lollapalooza shortly after releasing their self-titled debut album? That seems a little ridiculous, dontcha think? This Austin-TX band will lure you in with their cleverly assembled catchy pop songs. Think of Belle & Sebastian and The Magnetic Fields, but with a greater hint of electronica. I say an artist is a good one if they're upbeat enough to have you dancing but just mellow enough for a "Walk In The Park" which is exactly what Oh no! Oh my! is. Here -- give them a try!
Yours truly,
Menchie

Sundays at Hippie Hill, SF

RECOMMENDED SMOKE SPOT:
Within the first two minutes you step foot on Hippie Hill, it should be no surprise had you been offered a mushroom, ecstasy, lsd, or marijuana deal. All the hippies are pretty much dirty, strung-out, and obviously sketchy but all in all, everyone is considered to be hospitable.
The essential sonorous drum circle which is usually accommodated by several other instruments speaks for the whole population on Hippie Hill with its diversity, vibrant beats, and free-thinking atmosphere.
So, one of the things I find astonishing about this place is the wide variety of age groups here and their cognizance of all the crazy things going on. To further paint the picture, I mean parents come out here with their children for outdoor lounging and picnic right next to a group of teenagers who are blatantly smoking a fat bowl-- let alone everyone else who is most likely already baked.
Every now and then, you’ll find that crazy hippie doing the gnarliest dance remotely to the side. Other things you’ll see, or at least things I’ve seen going on at Hippie Hill, are hula-hoop dancing, men doing go-karts across the whole fucking gigantic field, juggling, the oldest female hippie walking around with a cane and joint in her hand, and perhaps you’ll even meet Bobby Free.
The most unconventional things go on at this place, but it also balances out with all the normal things that go on. The stoner drum circle (normal right?) invite people to dance and play along, assuring that everyone has a chance to get the full experience and if it’s a good Sunday, forty to fifty heads partake in the circle.
I wouldn’t say Hippie Hill briefly synopsizes San Francisco but it definitely depicts how liberal and in unison the city is. Hippie Hill is an awesome experience and I hope that you'll encounter it someday in your life.
Again, it’s perfect for outdoor lounging. However, there are three simple rules to this place. 1. Bring something to do. Guitar? Draw? Make out? 2. Pack a couple of bowls 3. Don’t fret about getting caught.
In a nutshell -- Hippie Hill is music, drugs, and tons of fun.

3ccd news!

Known and loved throughout the skateboarding community, Scuba Steve is the videographer that every skater wants to film with. eS has been very fortunate to utilize his talent for most of their video needs for the past several years. Given his motivating qualities and his close relationship with all of the guys on the team, it was only natural to elevate his role with eS by offering him the position of Team Manager.
Scuba is currently on the road with the team filming for the upcoming and much anticipated YeS! video. Tip your hat to Steve or give him a high-five when he comes through your neighborhood and congratulate him on his new role. To welcome Scuba as the new eS Team Manager, we’re giving him his very own colorway of the Accel, which matches the Sony VX1000 camera. In fact, you can enter to win Scuba’s camera at Active right now!
Congratulations, Steve!
Note: this contest is over on the Active site only

Donuts for Dilla

This Saturday, ham it up as The Echo re-lives the sounds of the late/great J Dilla (1974-2006). A Tribute to master chef of beats. I also need to mention that you'll be able to design YOUR OWN Dilla shirt, with live screenprinting. My only fustration: its a 21+ thang, so dont forget the I.D. because i do believe they're serving drinks. Props to Mel D. from VillageSlum for the photo.

Unsigned Artist of the Week
CRYSTAL CASTLES
CRYSTAL CASTLES
CRYSTAL CASTLES
If you're unfamiliar with Crystal Castles, a good song to start with is "Alice Practice" or their Crystal Castles vs. Klaxons mix of "Atlantis to Interzone". Almost usually, I prefer the ideal melodic mellow guitar-riff band (i.e. American Analog Set & Pinback) over the typical, irritable grungy techno band but by far, Crystal Castles is quite well at pulling off their raging vocals and lyrics with their thrashy techno beats.
Don't miss these Canadians when they're down with The Presets. March 16 @ Mezzanine, SF + March 17 @ X-Plex, LA.

Menchie
